Make Your Contribution Count!
Empowering conscious leadership • social impact • thriving communities
AI is powerful. It is also imperfect. And someti AI is powerful. It is also imperfect. And sometimes, it reveals more about the world it was trained on than the world as it actually is. I recently used AI to create a visual overview of my work, philosophy, and life journey. Overall, it captured many pieces beautifully: contribution, conscious leadership, community, voice, Africa, podcasting, and ripple effects. But one part stopped me. In the image, I am shown with African women I interviewed during my two-year journey across 19 African countries. These women were not background characters in my story. They were pioneers. Firsts in their fields. Women creating profound change in their communities, industries, and countries. They taught me. They expanded my perspective. They shaped my philosophy. They were not women I was “helping from above.” And yet, the visual risks suggesting exactly that. That matters. Because AI does not create in a vacuum. It pulls from patterns, assumptions, omissions, and biases already baked into the content it has been fed. And when women, especially women from diverse cultural, racial, and global perspectives, are underrepresented in the data, the output will reflect that absence. Not always loudly. Sometimes subtly. Sometimes beautifully enough that we almost miss the problem. That is the danger. AI can support our creativity, our strategy, our productivity, and even our reflection. But it cannot replace our discernment. So yes, use AI. Explore it. Challenge it. Question it. And for goodness’ sake, don’t let it become another system that quietly reinforces the very biases we are trying to dismantle. In hindsight, I should not have posted this image without naming the issue. It risks perpetuating a trope I have spent years working against. So I am naming it now. The women I interviewed across Africa were not part of my backdrop. They were part of my becoming. Don’t fall victim to AI’s bias. Do your due diligence.
