The people receiving the most hate are choosing th The people receiving the most hate are choosing the most love.

After volunteering on Friday and Saturday at Pride Collingwood, I decided to stay and enjoy some of the performances.

There was one part of the schedule that stopped me in my tracks: the Emerging Artist Showcase.

After each performance, the host asked the same simple question:
"What does Pride mean to you?"

The performances were incredible.

The answers were unforgettable.

One after another, the performers spoke about love. About acceptance. About authenticity. About belonging. About allyship. About community. About finally feeling safe enough to be themselves.

They spoke with gratitude for a small town that is intentionally creating space—not only for Collingwood's 2SLGBTQ+ community and surrounding area, but for families, allies, visitors, and anyone who believes everyone deserves to belong.
I've heard these messages before. I've said them.

Many times.

But for some reason, they landed differently this weekend.

I think it was because of the contrast with so much of what we're hearing around the world.

While conversations surrounding the Queer community are too often fuelled by fear, criticism, and division...

their response wasn't to mirror it.

Their response was love.

Not because it's easy.

Because it's a choice.

That struck me.

Leadership isn't always the loudest voice in the room.

Leadership is refusing to let someone else's anger define your response.

Leadership is creating a space where people can simply be who they are.

The irony isn't lost on me.

Those who are often on the receiving end of judgment spent the afternoon offering acceptance.

Those who are often misunderstood spent the afternoon inviting people to belong.

That's what leadership looks like. Thanks for the reminder.

If women got a dollar every time a man thought he If women got a dollar every time a man thought he had the right to tell them to smile, we wouldn't need venture capital.
There isn't a day that goes by that I don't cringe at the latest headline involving the orange man. But this one struck a particular nerve.

A woman is standing in front of the world doing her job—with professionalism, preparation, and grace—and somehow the conversation becomes whether she should smile more.

Really?

I was actually impressed by Kaitlan Collins' response. She didn't make herself the story, because good journalists know they aren't supposed to be. Some believe others should have jumped in on her behalf, and admittedly, part of me agrees.
But I also understand the discipline.
In journalism, the reporter isn't the story.

In life, though?

That's different.
When this happens in restaurants, workplaces, networking events, boardrooms, and social gatherings, don't wait for someone else to rescue the moment.

Have your own voice.
Because women weren't put on this planet to decorate your day. We're here to contribute, to lead, to challenge ideas, and yes... sometimes to look deep in thought while we're doing it.

And if someone insists you should smile more, here are a few responses you might borrow:
😐 "I'm working. You should try it."
😐 "I save my smiles for interesting conversations."
😐 "Don't worry, this is my 'I'm listening' face."
😐 "Would you say that to a man?"
😐 "I wasn't aware my facial expression required public feedback."
😐 "I'll smile when the moment calls for it."
😐 "Funny... I was just about to suggest you think more."

Here's the thing.

Every time we tell a woman to smile instead of listening to what she has to say, we send the message that her appearance matters more than her contribution.

And that's not leadership.
Make space for voices—not policing faces.

AI is powerful. It is also imperfect. And someti AI is powerful.

It is also imperfect.

And sometimes, it reveals more about the world it was trained on than the world as it actually is.

I recently used AI to create a visual overview of my work, philosophy, and life journey. Overall, it captured many pieces beautifully: contribution, conscious leadership, community, voice, Africa, podcasting, and ripple effects.

But one part stopped me.

In the image, I am shown with African women I interviewed during my two-year journey across 19 African countries.

These women were not background characters in my story.

They were pioneers. Firsts in their fields. Women creating profound change in their communities, industries, and countries.

They taught me.

They expanded my perspective.

They shaped my philosophy.

They were not women I was “helping from above.”

And yet, the visual risks suggesting exactly that.

That matters.

Because AI does not create in a vacuum. It pulls from patterns, assumptions, omissions, and biases already baked into the content it has been fed.

And when women, especially women from diverse cultural, racial, and global perspectives, are underrepresented in the data, the output will reflect that absence.

Not always loudly.

Sometimes subtly.

Sometimes beautifully enough that we almost miss the problem.

That is the danger.

AI can support our creativity, our strategy, our productivity, and even our reflection.

But it cannot replace our discernment.

So yes, use AI.

Explore it.

Challenge it.

Question it.

And for goodness’ sake, don’t let it become another system that quietly reinforces the very biases we are trying to dismantle.

In hindsight, I should not have posted this image without naming the issue. It risks perpetuating a trope I have spent years working against.

So I am naming it now.

The women I interviewed across Africa were not part of my backdrop.

They were part of my becoming.

Don’t fall victim to AI’s bias.

Do your due diligence.

Make your contribution count — consciously.

I'm so excited to receive and begin reading Holy R I'm so excited to receive and begin reading Holy Rebellion, written by my friend Christi, whom I met years ago in Kenya.

As an American woman raised in a deeply Evangelical system, Christi shares a journey that is both deeply personal and surprisingly universal. I'm only in the third chapter, and already I feel like I'm back in Kenya alongside her—experiencing the people, the places, and the questions that shaped her path.

But you don't need to travel to Africa—or to the many countries Christi has called home—to connect with this story.

At its heart, it's an exploration of something many of us understand: growing up with rules, expectations, beliefs, and identities that shaped who we became. Sometimes so deeply that we don't even realize how much they've influenced our choices, our voices, our relationships, and our sense of self.
What happens when we begin to question those assumptions?

What happens when authenticity becomes more important than approval?
Those are the questions that have me eagerly turning pages.

Thank you, Christi, for sending this all the way from Scotland and for having the courage to share your journey so openly.
And while my role in your story may have been small, I'm deeply honoured to have been a tiny part of your path toward greater clarity, authenticity, and self-discovery.

I can't wait to keep reading. 🌊📖 See less

In this YouMeWe Amplified Podcast, I had the unique opportunity to speak with Amanda Kelly, Co-Founder of AWAKE (@awake.ashes)

In this episode, we explore one of the most surprising innovations in sustainable deathcare: transforming cremation ashes into life-giving soil.

The idea didn’t start as a business.
It started with grief.

After unexpectedly becoming the caretaker of multiple urns belonging to loved ones, Amanda began asking questions about cremation, soil, and what really happens when ashes are returned to the earth.

What she discovered changed everything.

Today, Awake’s patented Ashes to Earth process helps families create living memorials—turning cremated remains into balanced soil capable of nurturing trees, gardens, and ecosystems.

But this conversation goes far beyond science.

It’s about grief, legacy, entrepreneurship, and the courage to build a mission-driven social enterprise in one of the most emotionally sensitive industries.
Because sometimes the most powerful contribution we make…
is the life we give back to the earth.

In this episode, you’ll discover:
• Why cremation ashes can damage soil and plants
• The science behind Awake’s Ashes to Earth process
• How grief sparked a groundbreaking green innovation
• The rise of sustainable funerals and eco memorials
• What it takes to build a mission-driven company in deathcare
• How families are creating living legacies

🌊 A world designed mostly by men will reflect most 🌊 A world designed mostly by men will reflect mostly men.
A world designed together will work for everyone.

Today is International Women’s Day — a moment to celebrate the women who lead, build, challenge, nurture, and shape our communities every day.

But it’s also a moment to ask a bigger question.

Women make up half the population, yet we are still dramatically under-represented in the rooms where many of the most important decisions are made — in municipal councils, provincial legislatures, national governments, and global institutions.

And when voices are missing from the table, perspectives are missing from the policies.

This isn’t about suggesting every woman should run for office.
But it is about recognizing that the systems shaping our societies must reflect the people they serve.

Because when leadership reflects the diversity of our communities, the solutions become stronger, more thoughtful, and more inclusive.

So today, let’s celebrate women.

And tomorrow, let’s continue encouraging more women to step forward, raise their voices, and shape the future.

🌊 Because a world designed together works better for everyone.

How to get your children involved in your business How to get your children involved in your business and social impact, and why.

What if social impact wasn’t added on… but built in?

In this episode of YouMeWe Amplified, Suzanne F. Stevens sits down with @danakaluzny , co-owner of @endswellbeer in Collingwood, to explore how purpose can live inside the business model — not just the marketing.

From launching Soda Bros, a youth-led social enterprise created with her sons (where 50% of profits support local community organizations), to designing a brewery culture rooted in belonging and sustainability, Dana shares what it looks like to lead with intention.

In this conversation, we cover:

Baking social impact into your business plan
Raising entrepreneurial kids who understand profit and generosity
Setting boundaries when impact meets capacity
Working with your partner — navigating strengths, tension, and communication
Building a flat team culture through ownership and humility
This is a conversation about beer, yes —
but more importantly, about leadership, community, and designing business to “end well.”

If you’re building something in your town and wondering how it can matter more, this episode is for you.
